A 27-year-old man drowned near the port of Manahoro on the east coast, reports the official bulletin of the national disaster office. About 8,000 people were evacuated from flood-prone areas.
The eye of the cyclone passed 30 kilometers north of the town of Mananjary where winds of 130 km/h were recorded, with gusts of 180. Mananjary had already been devastated by two cyclones last year. The balance sheet is not yet more precise.
We were able to reach Doctor Firoze Koytcha, who is leading the humanitarian medical mission of Indian Ocean doctors, he is in Ambositra, on Freddy’s path at the moment. He confirms that there was a lot of wind and rain, but no cataclysm at first sight.
Freddy will emerge in the Mozambique Channel this Wednesday evening and perhaps strengthen before touching Mozambique on Thursday evening. “This cyclone is really a mess,” said Reunion’s weather director.
